June 2nd - (3:30 - 5:00 pm)
Italian Republic Day - Italian Cultural Centre

Italian Republic Day, June 2nd signals the opening of the Edmonton Verdi Festival. The Italian Folk Choir will sing for us the two Anthems, Italian and Canadian, to honour such significant historical events in our nations' history. Later in the program, the Choir will perform one of the most famous and meaningful choral works by Verdi, the "Va Pensiero" from Nabucco. Songs by V. Bellini, B. Marcello, G. Puccini, A. Boito, F. Cilea, G. Verdi, will be performed by the three singers Ella Zenari, Nancy Mark and Sanja Zakanji, with the piano accompaniment by the Resident Performers, Stephanie Kwan and myself. Chamber works by G. Verdi, R. Leoncavallo, and F. Alfano, in the form of duets for piano four-hands, violin and piano, cello and piano, and trio for violin, cello and piano, will be performed as well together with the members of the Artistic Committee Silvia Buttiglione (cello) and Mattia Berrini (violin). I am pleased to focus the attention in particular on the rarely performed work for piano trio by Franco Alfano, the composer well-known for being the one chosen by Arturo Toscanini to complete Turandot after Puccini's death.
