Appuntamenti Musicali Verdiani

PatriottismoThe Appuntamenti Musicali Verdiani are short concerts taking place on four Sundays in June and will showcase selections from Verdi's works. They are an antipasto to the concerts that will take place on August 4th on the main-stage at the Edmonton Heritage Days Festival and the October 11th gala concert at the Winspear Centre for Music.

An Operatic Journey

by EVF Artistic Director Emilio De Mercato

Artistic Director Emilio De Mercato at the PianoSometimes reality takes over imagination: this time with the Appuntamenti Musicali Verdiani in June! The Edmonton Verdi Festival is approaching very fast and the Appuntamenti Musicali Verdiani are the first chapter of an amazing Festival for the 200th anniversary of the birth of Giuseppe Verdi.

Initially our intent was to offer just few short concerts, but now we have a series of four true concerts, each of them with about 60 minutes of well-balanced vocal and instrumental music, and several performers.

The 4 Appuntamenti in numbers:

PerformersPrograms
13 singers30 songs
1 choir5 piano four-hands
1 string quartet2 two piano
2 string players1 piano trio
2 pianists2 instrumental duets
 3 piano quintets
 1 string quartet
 3 chorals

The Artistic Committee selected eight singers during two days of auditions in April, 2013 at the Alberta College Conservatory of Music Grant MacEwan University. Two voice teachers from the same major Edmonton institution agreed to perform as well, and three Italian young singers were invited as emerging talents of the Italian community of Edmonton.

The musical programs showcase Giuseppe Verdi’s music. This was our first goal and demanding of all the performers involved. However, we also wanted to view Verdi in the larger context of 19th century Italian operatic music; therefore, we included works by other Italian operatic composers (such as Rossini, Bellini, Puccini, and others), and, in the end, by any Italian composer.

As the music world knows, 2013 is Richard Wagner’s year too. We did not forget that and his gigantic music will be performed in a very unique and original way.

Don’t miss the opportunity of an exciting Operatic Journey!

A very special THANK to all musicians and performers of the Edmonton Verdi Festival – Appuntamenti Musicali Verdiani.

VIVA VERDI! VIVA LA MUSICA!
